The trail is open again! 26 miles of zero traffic, gradual climbing on hard pack gravel to the Hyak Tunnel then a fun safe descent back. Not great on old school super skinny road tires but anything in the 30s should be fine. Trail is easy to follow. Ride any pace you want. Meet at top. Ride leader will trail the descent. Alternate to shorten the ride by starting at Rattlesnake Lake Large parking lot. Meet at the beach appx 0930. Please alert ride leader if you take this option.

When riding, NO earbuds/earphones, NO music, NO phone calls.
Your 1st ride with COGS is on us. For additional rides, please join as a member. Our insurance requires it.
Riders are expected to be self-supporting with spare tubes, pump, water, snacks. Weather conditions can and will change, be prepared. Please also bring safe riding skills and good road manners.

As many of you know, the club has been offering an annual century ride in honor of our dear friend Tom Schaefer, who was famous for doing at least one century ride every month. Year round. This year, I would like to offer a shorter memorial ride, the mid lake loop, which was one of Tom’s favorite go-to routes as part of staying in cycling shape year-round. We will ride to honor both Tom Schaefer and another beloved club member, Arnold Chin, who rode the Tom Schaefer memorial century last year, and with whom I’ve also ridden the mid lake loop. By offering a shorter ride, I hope to make it easier for more COGS members and friends of Tom and Arnold to participate and celebrate these two riders' friendship and passion for cycling. Unlike the century, we will ride more or less together, with periodic regroups. If enough people show up, we’ll divide into smaller pace groups. There will be a brief coffee stop in Bellevue.

We will start and end in Magnuson Park, near the Magnuson Café and Brewery. After the ride, let’s share lunch or a beverage at the Magnuson Café to celebrate our bicycling friendships, past and present. Anyone who doesn’t want to ride is welcome to join us at the Magnuson Café after the ride.

Sunday July 19 will be our backup ride date in case of rain. Cancellation for rain, smoke, etc. to be sent no later than 7:30 AM day of ride.

Made Bike Show and Greater Portland Gravel (19 Aug 2026)

Portland's Made framebuilder bike show takes place August 21-23 and we think it’s the perfect excuse to spend some extra days exploring some of the fantastic gravel roads in the area while we're down there.

Wednesday, August 19, we will ride a scenic mixed terrain loop through the rolling rural hills west of Portland. The gravel section in the middle of the route is reported to be a bit rough, adding an additional challenge to the day. After the ride, we'll gather for a well-earned meal at the Rock Creek Tavern.

Thursday, August 20, we'll enjoy a gradual gravel climb on the west side of Mount Hood, making our way to picturesque Trillium Lake. The route primarily follows Still Creek Road but also includes portions of the historic Barlow Road as well as the old Mount Hood highway.

Friday, August 21, we will attend the Made bike show. It runs from 9 am - 5 pm at Zidell Yards.

What to bring:

Large tires for the gravel sections. 40’s are probably a minimum. Narrower tires will decrease control while increasing both discomfort and the chance of flat tires.
Lots of water. There will be plenty of climbing with few options for refilling.
GPS & maps to navigate on your own.
Spare tubes, pump, tools and other biking gear to make you self-sufficient are also necessary. We will be out of cell coverage for portions of the ride.

Car pools are available. Contact ride leader if interested.

Non COGS members are allowed to participate in one COGS club ride according to the club insurance policy, so please only sign up for a single ride if you are not a member, thanks.
