COGS 7 Day Rogue River Ramble Tour
COGS is offering a beautiful seven-day bike tour in the southwest corner of Oregon starting and finishing at the southern end of the Willamette Valley in Sutherlin, Oregon from August 19 - 27, 2017. This description outlines what promises to be a fun-filled and adventuresome COGS bike tour.
COGS has again requested Ralph and Carol – long time COGS members, who for the past 15 years have been organizing and leading professional style bike tours as volunteers around the country - to coordinate and lead this Tour. This will be their fifth tour for COGS. They have agreed to do so at cost. They will be our tour leaders and will make all the tour arrangements including providing cue sheets and maps for each day along with lots of ideas for interesting things to do en route.
This tour takes in some of the best scenery southwest Oregon has to offer. We begin in Sutherlin where the hills are steeper and the roads quieter and windier. We head east across the Coast Range over some of those lovely steep and windy roads to Reedsport. From there, we head south to Gold Beach and then to Brookings along the Oregon coast, sometimes hugging the shoreline and sometimes in the hills above. This is some of the less known yet prettiest portion of the Oregon Coast. In Gold Beach, we will take the Rogue River jet boat up the river on a scenic tour of this remote river. The last two days we will return to Sutherlin first riding along the Rogue, then heading north and finally back east through the coast range. The daily distances average 70 miles, while elevation gains vary from 3,000 to 5,000 ft. All told, we should end up with over 420 miles and 25,000’ of climbing. See overview route map below.
The ride is intended for riders with moderate to advanced biking skill levels or better. Everyone can ride at their own comfortable pace. We will be climbing 3,000’ – 4,000’ most days with one day at 5,000’. There will be a day off in Gold Beach with a tour of the Rogue River on a Jet Boat. Although the route generally traverses lightly travelled rural roads, there are occasional stretches with no shoulder and/or significant traffic. The trip will be supported with a dedicated SAG van and a support truck to haul all of our stuff. If you’re having an off day or have a mechanical you can always catch a ride in the SAG van. The cost of the tour includes the SAG truck and van as well as motel lodging, snacks and lunch along the way. No camping needed on this trip! Breakfast and dinner are on your own but several motels will be serving a warm breakfast at no additional cost.
The ride is open to COGS members; however priority will be given first to those who have been COGS members as of 10/18/16, the date of our last annual meeting. The ride will be limited to 30 riders. There will be an open registration period from January 9 – 15, 2017. If the tour is oversubscribed a lottery system will be used to determine the final approval of registrations for the tour. If the tour is not full (30 paid up riders) as of January 15th registration will remain open until the tour is filled to ensure all the fixed costs are covered.
The cost of the trip is $1315 per participant. This includes the cost of the per diem for the ride leaders and SAG drivers, motels, vehicle support, snacks/lunch and other miscellaneous costs associated with organizing and fielding the trip. 30% ($400) of the cost for each rider will be collected at time of registration and the remainder is due 90 days prior to the event ($915 due no later than May 19th). All participants will need to be or become COGS members so that COGS insurance covers everyone on the ride. If you are not a COGS member you must join COGS with the annual club dues of $16 (individual) or $20 (family) prior to registering for the tour.
How do I sign up?
Carefully read all about the tour on the 2017 Rogue River Ramble Tour Full Description, and check out the complete map of the tour route. Note the refund and transfer policies. Once the tour is open for registration, you can sign up using the following process:
1. If not already logged in, login to the COGS website using the button on the top of the page.
If you are not yet a member, you need to join COGS first, then you can login to the website.
2. Register for the tour. This will include:
Payment of the tour deposit of $400.
If you want a private room, select the Single Supplement option and an additional $660 will be added to your deposit.
Indicate your Preferred Roommate (if any) on the registration page.
If you would like to be linked to your roommate in the case of a lottery (see below), please check the Link Registration checkbox. If you are linked to a roommate, you will both be assigned a single lottery number. Otherwise each of you will be assigned your own lottery number but both of you may not get in. In this case a different roommate will be assigned to you.

Optional: If you have a family membership, you can register and pay for additional family members with your login by entering their COGS membership e-mail address in the on-line registration form and completing the registration steps again.
After the open registration period is finished, if there are more than 30 registrations, COGS will do a review to determine if a lottery is necessary. After assigning priority to those who were members as of 10/18/16, if a lottery is still needed it will be done as follows:
The lottery will use a random number process to choose the registrants to be confirmed for the tour.
For registrants who are linked together they will be assigned one lottery number and both will either be confirmed or waitlisted together.
The COGS Registrar will send a confirmation email when they receive your registration and the COGS Registrar will send a confirmation email when they receive your registration and your deposit.
Any registrations not selected in the lottery system will be put on a wait list.
After January 20th, the tour registration will open up to those who are not COGS members.
Remember your final payment of $915 ($1575 for single occupancy) is due no later than May 19th.
